Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has announced that he has tested positive for Covid-19 for the third time since the pandemic began. Despite experiencing mild symptoms, the president has said that he will take a few days off to recover.

Lopez Obrador (69) had previously contracted the virus twice, and reported only mild symptoms during both episodes. However, given his history of a serious heart attack in 2013, there may be concern about his health.

The president has sought to reassure the public that he is not seriously ill, and that his heart is functioning at 100%. Nevertheless, his recent diagnosis has highlighted the continuing threat of Covid-19 and the need for continued vigilance.

Interior Minister Adan Augusto Lopez will be standing in for the president at his regular morning news conference while he takes time off to recover.

It is worth noting that Lopez Obrador underwent cardiac catheterization in January 2022 and was found to be in good health. The government has stated that the president regularly undergoes lab tests, electrocardiograms, stress tests, and CT scans as part of his check-up routine.

The news of the president’s positive test comes as Mexico is battling a resurgence in Covid-19 cases. In recent weeks, the country has seen a rise in cases, particularly in the states of Jalisco and Yucatan.

Mexico has been hit hard by the pandemic, with more than 3 million confirmed cases and over 257,000 deaths reported since the outbreak began. Despite the country’s vaccination efforts, the threat of the virus remains, and the president’s diagnosis serves as a reminder of the need for continued vigilance and caution.
